Hertford Jazz Jam has run monthly since May 2023 providing a space for anyone with an interest in jazz to perform in front of an an adoring, or at least vaguely appreciative, audience. Come along, put your name on the list and await your chance to join in with the house band.
If you sing or play a lead instrument (saxophone, guitar, piano, etc) you get to 'call' the tune. Usually it will be one the band already know or can find the chord chart in the 'real books' or app (iRealPro) - if not, you can bring paper copies of the music. You count the band in and with luck and great mystery, a recognisable tune will emerge.
If you play a rhythm instrument like drums, bass, or you're sitting in on piano or guitar, you don't get to choose, so be prepared to play along to things you might never have heard before.
A bit of chaos is inevitable and will be embraced by all as the natural consequence of the creative process, but sometimes, out of chaos, the magic happens...
All abilities from beginner to pro are welcome in a relaxed and encouraging atmosphere.
Bring your instrument, voice or sticks to join in, or just come to listen and enjoy the music.
